Overview
Cinematic pulse engine
Schema: Dark is a cinematic synthesizer pulse engine created by Native Instruments for composers and sound designers producing atmospheric score-adjacent music. Part of NI's flagship Komplete lineup, it generates subterranean rhythms, evolving textures, and deep sonic landscapes. I designed the complete product user interface at Native Instruments: interaction model, layout architecture, custom controls, and visual language.
Designing digital audio workstation (DAW) plugins requires balancing strict screen constraints and design system requirements with complex sound synthesis controls that have to stay readable under dim studio lighting. I translated the instrument's raw, subterranean character into an intuitive, tactile dark interface that holds its identity without getting in the way of musicians' workflows.
Challenge
Raw. Dense. Atmospheric.
Schema: Dark has a specific personality: raw, dense, and atmospheric. The UI needed to carry that without tipping into illegibility or getting in the way of the work. DAW plugin interfaces come with real constraints (strict size limits, design system requirements, controls that have to stay readable under studio lighting), and the dark aesthetic had to work within all of it.
Approach
Character first
I started from the instrument's character and worked outward. I designed the full product UI at Native Instruments: interaction model, layout, controls, visual language. I worked within the NI design system and pushed its aesthetic range to fit what Schema: Dark actually sounds like.
Result
Shipped globally
Schema: Dark shipped as part of the Komplete lineup and is sold globally on the Native Instruments platform. The visual identity holds up to the instrument's character.
