Schema: Dark
Overview
Schema: Dark is a cinematic synthesizer by Native Instruments for composers and sound designers working in dark, ambient, and score-adjacent music. It generates subterranean rhythms, atmospheric textures, and slowly evolving sonic landscapes, and is part of NI's Komplete lineup.
Challenge
Schema: Dark has a specific personality: raw, dense, atmospheric. The UI needed to carry that without tipping into illegibility or getting in the way of the work. DAW plugin interfaces come with real constraints: strict size limits, design system requirements, controls that have to stay readable under studio lighting and the dark aesthetic had to work within all of it.
Approach
I started from the instrument's character and worked outward. The aesthetic needed to come from the sound, not get layered on top of it. I designed the full product UI at Native Instruments: interaction model, layout, controls, visual language. I worked within the NI design system and pushed its aesthetic range to fit what Schema: Dark actually sounds like.
Result
Schema: Dark shipped as part of the Komplete lineup and is sold globally on the Native Instruments platform. The visual identity holds up to the instrument's character.
My Role
UI design at Native Instruments. I owned the interaction model, visual language, and control design, working closely with audio engineering and development throughout.
